Liam Lawson sends a strong message after Sergio Perez’s reaction

VCARB driver Liam Lawson has spoken out after his heated argument with Red Bull driver Sergio Perez during the Mexican Grand Prix weekend. Lawson, who recently replaced Daniel Ricciardo at Red Bull’s sister team, is widely considered a potential replacement for Perez next year if he does not find significant improvements in his performance.

The pair became involved in a heated battle at the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez circuit, which ended with Lawson giving the middle finger to the Mexican driver. Speaking to the media Ahead of the Brazilian Grand Prix weekend, Lawson explained:

“My attitude to racing and how I approach racing in Formula 1 will not change, I will always remain that way.

“But at the same time, there are things in it: if I make mistakes, I will always learn from them, and in Mexico I obviously made a mistake, and I will learn from them.

“Basically, we spoke after the race, but at the same time we left the track very early, at least immediately afterwards. I think it was a fight on the track and I obviously apologize for what I did after the incident.

“But in terms of the fight we had on track, I think it was considered a racing incident and something that was a fight at the time.

“I might learn from the mistakes I made. But at the same time, I will take advice from anyone I can and my goal is not to make enemies with anyone, obviously that’s not the goal, but at the same time I’m not here to make friends. I’m here to win.”

This comes after Perez had strong words for the New Zealander. Perez commented after the Mexican Grand Prix that he felt Lawson did not have the right attitude for Formula 1 racing. He said:

“I think because of the way he came to Formula 1, he doesn’t have the right attitude for it. He has to be a bit more modest, you know. When two-time world champion said things last weekend, he completely ignored him.

“It’s like coming to Formula 1, of course you are very hungry, but you have to be respectful off the track as well as on the track. I don’t think he shows the right attitude to have a good attitude to demonstrate.” pace for himself, because I think he is a great driver and I hope for him that he can take a step back and learn from it.”

He added:

I think he has had too many incidents in his first two Grands Prix and I think there will come a point where it will cost him too much, like this weekend. I just think he has to have the right attitude to say, Look, I’m overdoing it a little bit, I’ll step back and start again. It’s all the learning you have to do as a young person because if you don’t learn from your mistakes, Formula 1 is a cutthroat world and maybe he could. Don’t continue.”
