Hate crime and terrorism charges filed against Sidi Mohamed Abdallahi for shooting a Jewish man in Chicago in West Rogers Park

Hate crime and terrorism charges filed against Sidi Mohamed Abdallahi for shooting a Jewish man in Chicago in West Rogers Park

CHICAGO (WLS) — Chicago police have filed hate crime and terrorism charges against a man accused of fatally shooting a Jewish man on the North Side last weekend, in addition to 14 other charges he already faces.

Sidi Mohammed Abdullahi, 22, is already facing 14 felonies, including attempted first-degree murder, aggravated assault and attempted murder of a police officer, after he allegedly shot a Jewish man while walking to the synagogue on Saturday morning. The victim was wearing a yarmulke, a traditional Jewish head covering, also known as a yarmulke.

Police said Abdullahi shot him without saying a word. About 30 minutes later, the incident escalated when Abdullahi allegedly opened fire on five first responders. The police returned fire and shot him several times.

Abdullahi has since been hospitalized in intensive care. CPD Supt. Larry Snelling said they were unable to interview him because of his injuries, delaying additional charges, but relied on digital evidence to investigate allegations that the shooting was a hate crime. Snelling said they found evidence on his phone showing the shooting was planned and deliberately targeted Jews.

“We will never do things based solely on faith. We need evidence,” Snelling said. “Evidence from the perpetrator’s phone indicated that he planned the shooting and specifically targeted people of Jewish faith.”

WATCH: Hate crime, terrorism charges announced

CPD Supt. Larry Snelling and Cook County State’s Attorney Kim Foxx were joined by Mayor Brandon Johnson and Ald. Deb Silverstein when they announced hate crime and terrorism charges.

Mayor Brandon Johnson, along with police and Cook County State’s Attorney Kim Foxx, said: “There is absolutely no place in Chicago for anti-Semitism. There is absolutely no place in our city for hatred against our Jewish community.”

He also thanked 50th Ward Debra Silverstein for her tireless advocacy after the incident.

Foxx said her office’s decision to file terrorism charges underscores the seriousness of the crime and its efforts to “destabilize our communities through fear and hate.”

Foxx, Snelling and Johnson all emphasized that the additional charges are not the result of public pressure or media attention, but instead a result of their ongoing investigation.

“This was a very affirming moment for our community because we felt so deeply purposeful,” said Sarah van Loon of the American Jewish Committee. “It’s time for our communities to come together and get to know each other.”

“The Jewish community can rest assured that we are using every aspect of government to ensure they are safe,” said Mayor Johnson.

FBI data from 2023 shows that despite the fact that Jewish people make up only about 2% of the U.S. population, anti-Semitic incidents accounted for more than 15% of all hate crimes nationwide.

The ADL said the number of anti-Semitic incidents in Chicago increased by nearly 300% in the past year, compared to the year before, contributing to the growing fear felt by Jewish families.

Local Jewish organizations said they have been in regular contact with Chicago police since Saturday’s shooting. Police said they do not believe there are any other threats to the community at this time. The 39-year-old victim is expected to recover.

Abdullahi was due to appear in court this week, but his hearing was moved to November 7.

The American Jewish Committee released a statement after the additional charges were announced, writing: “Since Saturday, the Chicago Jewish community has sought reassurance that authorities are investigating this attack as a hate crime, as we were deeply concerned that a member of our community was violent. That said, we continue to push for a thorough investigation so that justice can be served.”
