Woman seriously injured in single-vehicle accident in Haiku

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – A 44-year-old woman was seriously injured in a crash in Haiku on Halloween morning, Maui police said.

It happened just before 6 a.m. on West Kuiaha Road.

A preliminary investigation revealed that a Kia Sorento was traveling southbound when it left the roadway, struck a fence and overturned.

Police said Good Samaritans freed two people — the 44-year-old woman, who was the driver, and a 2-year-old girl — from the vehicle.

The woman was unresponsive and transported to Maui Memorial Medical Center in critical condition.

The toddler was not injured, police said.

MPD is still investigating whether speed, alcohol and drugs played a role.
