Fired Disney Employee Accused of Changing Restaurant Menus for ‘Health and Safety Reasons’

A Florida man who was fired from Disney this summer is accused of hacking into the company’s computer system and rewriting menu items for restaurants, which could be deadly for potential customers.

Michael Scheuer was fired on June 13, 2024 for allegedly removing peanut allergy information from menus, changing fonts and adding profanity. Fox 35 reported in Orlando.

Disney says the firing was “controversial… and not considered amicable,” while Scheuer says he did nothing wrong and that the company framed him.

Michael Scheuer was fired on June 13, 2024 for allegedly removing peanut allergy information from menus, changing fonts and adding profanity.

Scheuer was a menu production manager for Disney who was fired for “misconduct,” according to the filed complaint, which further stated that he was responsible for the creation and distribution of all restaurant menus for the company. According to the report, his alleged changes did not make it to the print or digital menus.

The alleged menu changes by Scheuer — who was called a “threat actor” — posed a threat to public health and safety, the complaint said.

“The threat actor manipulated the allergen information on menus by adding information to some allergen notifications that indicated certain menu items were safe for people with peanut allergies, when in fact they could be fatal for people with peanut allergies,” the complaint said.

In addition to removing important peanut allergy information on the menus, Scheuer also allegedly added profanity and changed the prices of certain items on menus.

The complaint states that Scheuer also sent multiple login requests, known as DDoS attacks or hacks, which resulted in a handful of employees losing access to their accounts and systems within the company.

An FBI raid on Scheuer’s home on September 23 led to the seizure of at least four computers, the report said. Scheuer denied all allegations against the FBI.

“The criminal charges acknowledge that no one was injured or harmed by menu changes. Mr. Scheuer has a disability that has impacted his work at Disney. He had a medical event that got him suspended,” said David Haas, the attorney who spoke on behalf of Scheuer.

“Disney subsequently failed to respond to his questions about why he was being suspended and then inexplicably changed his suspension to a termination. Disney refused to answer why he was fired and made no adjustments for him. he filed an EEOC complaint in I look forward to powerfully presenting my client’s side of the story.”

The complaint states that none of the changes affected print menus or digital menus, but that it had cost the company at least $150,000 in damages to date, which was considered a conservative estimate and was still being determined.

Scheuer is charged with one count each of knowingly causing the transmission of a program, information, code or command to a protected computer and intentionally causing damage without consent in excess of $5,000.
