‘Brat’ crowned Word of the Year 2024 by Collins Dictionary – News

“Brat” has been named “Word of the Year” by Collins Dictionary.

Inspired by Charli XCXthe summer’s mega hit album ‘Snot’the word was selected by Collins lexicographers for being “one of the most talked-about words of 2024”.

While “snot” already existed in Collins Dictionary well before “Brat Summer,” as “When you call someone, especially a child, a bratyou mean that he or she behaves badly or irritates you” – the dictionary has added a new definition for 2024, which is “characterized by a confident, independent and hedonistic attitude.”

After the release of ‘Brat’ earlier this summer, Charli started working on it TikTok to describe her own definition of “Brat” as “someone with a pack of cigarettes, a Bic lighter, and a white strappy top with no bra.”

“You’re like that girl who’s a bit messy, likes to party and might say stupid things sometimes,” she explained.

Collins’ Charli XCX-inspired definition topped a list of 10 words selected by the dictionary as defining 2024, with the dictionary explain that the word had “resonated with people worldwide and that ‘snot summer’ established itself as an aesthetic and a way of life.”
