Predictions of the international championship

The final ranking event before the UK Championship takes the players to Nanjing, China, for the International Championship and the form player of the season, Judd Trump, is once again dominating the betting.

Trump was no match for Kyren Wilson at the Northern Ireland Open last time out – losing 9-3 in a one-way final. But the Ace in the Pack had previously won prizes in the Shanghai Masters and Saudi Arabia Masters and has a tendency to perform in all conditions.

However, with Zhang Anda the defending champion this week – and therefore the top seed – there is a lopsided view of the draw, with Trump, world champion Wilson, Mark Selby and Neil Robertson all slotted in the bottom half.

That means it could be worth focusing on the top half, where Ronnie O’Sullivan is the cheapest runner, as he looks set to make his first league appearance since being knocked out in the first round at the English in mid-September Open.

The Rocket withdrew from the last event in Belfast and with his well-being unknown, there could be potential with Anda too, not in the same vein as last season.

2015 champion John Higgins could be the first port of call as he has had a solid start to the season, highlighted by a second-place finish to Selby at the British Open.

The Scot has lost just four of his last 16 matches, with his three other defeats coming against Allen, Trump and Barry Hawkins.

But the Wizard of Wishaw has quite an early draw to work with, starting with his toughest test against Ben Woollaston before facing Anda in the quarter-final.

Allen, who used his 2018 victory in this tournament as a springboard to finish second in the British Championship, is also worth a mention.

The Pistol has reached the last eight of the British Open and the last four of the English Open this season. He starts against Aaron Hill with Ricky Walden or Xiao Guodong waiting in the last 32, suggesting a deep run could be within his capabilities.
