Schools decide! Children are ‘growing their roots’ at Concord High

LANSING, Mich. (WILX) – Concord High School is changing the way students learn in the classroom by moving away from traditional teaching methods.

Students grow their roots by learning how to support the roots of a plant.

“We grow 50 pounds of fresh produce per month,” said Jill Snyder, principal of Concord High School.

Concord High students produce fresh nutrients vertically through flex farms. It is an efficient agricultural technology.

“Our school must be able to offer students the opportunity to learn outside of the traditional classroom environment,” Snyder said.

Students expand in the classroom by learning the science of hydroponics: growing plants in water instead of soil.

“It’s fun and different because I’m used to planting in soil,” says Hayden Stanhope.

From the ground to the cafeteria:

“It’s also satisfying to see people eating the things you make,” says Stanhope.

The products are made and consumed by high school students.

“We have a daily taco bar and use the lettuce every day,” says Snyder.

The mobile indoor hydroponics takes advantage of their education and also allows students to grow fresh food all year round.

“Water farming in towers is really effective,” says Stanhope.

The program continues to grow as more students get excited about the classroom.
