Wagner looks to keep his playoff hopes alive against Boerne Champion on TNL

SAN ANTONIO – Boerne champion junior wide receiver Brogan Dempsey made just three catches on Thursday Night Lights, but they all ended with Dempsey in the end zone to help the Chargers beat the Wagner Thunderbirds 31-26.

It was a back and forth game between Wagner and Boerne Champion.

Dempsey’s third touchdown grab of the game, with 37 seconds left in the third quarter, gave the Chargers the lead for good.

Wagner senior fullback William Reynolds scored the first points of the game for the Thunderbirds on a 16-yard run.

Reynolds rushed for over 100 yards in the first half and added his second touchdown of the game with 7:38 remaining in the second quarter.

Boerne champion sophomore quarterback Julian Navarrete connected with Dempsey on a 68-yard strike in the first quarter to tie the game at 7.

The pair reconnected on the second play of the second quarter for a 55-yard touchdown, giving the Chargers a 14-10 lead.

Dempsey finished with a total of 139 yards in the game.

At halftime the teams were tied at 17 points.

Junior running back Zachary Garcia added a 41-yard rushing touchdown with 5:26 left in the game to give Boerne Champion a two-score lead.

The Thunderbirds closed the gap when Reynolds scored his third touchdown of the game with 1:19 left in the game, but Wagner failed to recover the onside kick attempt.

Reynolds, who will play in the San Antonio Sports All-Star Game in January, rushed for 271 yards on 24 carries.

SNEAKERS & SHOES

San Antonio has shown good, bad and ugly early in this young season. They win the home opener in a game they probably would have lost last year and showed something they didn’t have a year ago: physicality. Plus, some Cowboys talk.
