Nick Bosa unlikely to be suspended over MAGA hat as NFL review incident: report

The N.F.L is reportedly reviewing the incident in which San Francisco 49ers defensive end Nick Bosa flashed a “Make America Great Again” hat during a live postgame interview, according to a report.

Bosa will reportedly not be banned, but could be fined for breaching competition rules. CBS Sports NFL insider Jonathan Jones reported. The incident occurred when Bosa crashed 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy’s postgame interview following the team’s win over the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday night. Bosa came up behind Purdy and pointed to his hat. San Francisco tight end George Kittle laughed as the defender ran back to the locker room.

During the post-match press conference, Bosa declined to speak about the matter.

“I’m not going to talk about it too much, but I think it’s an important time,” he said after the match.

Bosa has been a longtime supporter of former President Trump, since before he entered the NFL. He announced this in 2019 he cleaned his X report of Trump posts and criticism of former 49ers quarterback and activist Colin Kaepernick over concerns that he might not be fully embraced by the city of San Francisco if drafted by the 49ers.

Former Chicago Bears great Brian Urlacher lent his support to Bosa. He responded to Bosa’s Instagram post, in which the 49ers defensive lineman posted a collage of photos, including the moment he showed off the supportive Trump hat.

“MAGA,” Urlacher wrote in the comments section, along with two American flags.

Meanwhile, Robert Rivas, who is the 71st Speaker of the California State Assembly, called for trade in Bosa.

“I hope (49ers CEO) @JedYork trades Nick Bosa to Mar-A-Lago. As a lifelong @49ers fan, I can say I’ve seen enough of Bosa in California,” Rivas posted on X.

The NFL rulebook Rule 5, Section 4, Rule 8 determines what players may wear and, more importantly, what they may not wear when entering the stadium on match day.

“The League shall not authorize any club or player to wear, display or otherwise convey, through helmet stickers, armbands, jersey patches, mouthpieces or other items affixed to match uniforms or equipment, any message relating to on political activities or causes, other non-football events, causes or campaigns, or charitable causes or campaigns. In addition, such approved items may be modest in size, tasteful, non-commercial and non-controversial,” the rule reads.

“During the period on match day when a player is visible to the stadium and television audience (including during pre-match warm-ups, on the bench and during post-match interviews in the dressing room or on the pitch), the players prohibited from wearing clothing, displaying or otherwise conveying personal messages, written or in illustrations, unless such message has been previously approved by the League office,” the handbook said.

The rule also states that things like “birthdays or momentous events, or honoring or commemorating individuals” with helmet stickers, jersey patches and armbands are allowed, as long as the league office is notified.

The league previously handed out a $10,000 fine Pittsburgh Steelers receiver George Pickens for placing a personal message on his eye black during a game against the Cowboys on October 6.

Meanwhile, Bosa isn’t the only outspoken Trump supporter in the league.

Kansas City Chiefs leader Harrison Butker also endorsed Trump earlier this year, while Philadelphia Eagles defensive lineman Thomas Booker IV was rooting for Vice President Kamala Harris.
