Man pleads guilty to reckless driving in crash that killed 13-year-old Colorado boy

HIGHLANDS RANCH, Colo. (KKTV) – A sentencing hearing is scheduled for the man responsible for the death of 13-year-old Alexander Mackiewicz.

Mackiewicz’s life was cut short on March 6 in Highlands Ranch when 53-year-old Ruben Morones struck him with his car. The accident happened in Highlands Ranch. This week, Morones pleaded guilty to reckless driving according to the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office.

“The defendant’s guilty plea is a step toward justice, but it does little to alleviate the deep loss felt by Alex’s family and the community,” said Douglas County Sheriff Darren Weekly. “A precious life was cut short because of careless choices, and we will continue to work tirelessly to make our roads safer through public education and traffic enforcement. As sheriff, I am committed to working with the Mackiewicz family and our Legislature to strengthen the law and change the penalties for careless driving resulting in death.”

Morones’ sentencing is scheduled for January 7.
