SE Houston mom wonders why her 7-year-old son was allowed to leave school and board a METRO bus without one of his guardians present

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) — A southeast Houston mother is wondering why her seven-year-old was allowed to leave school and board a METRO bus without one of his guardians present.

Fernanda Cardona said she left to pick up her son Friday afternoon when he came home alone.

Cardona said she and her mother normally have to present a blue plaque to the staff at Park Place Elementary before her son can be discharged.

But on Friday, the boy told Eyewitness News he was allowed to leave campus alone.

He said he crossed a street and boarded a METRO bus back to the family’s apartment complex, about a quarter mile away.

“He knew how to get home. I’m very grateful for that, but it’s just something that’s very concerning,” Cardona said.

Cardona said she sought answers from her son’s assistant principal but didn’t get them.

“She apologized. She explained to me that she doesn’t know how this happened. She explained to me that she would watch the videos, but she only explained to me that she couldn’t do it today because she was busy with fall festival,” Cardona said.

But Cardona said no celebration is as important when a child’s safety is in question.

“Today was my child. I don’t want it to be tomorrow. Another child and then a child goes missing or something happens. A child is ultimately dead,” Cardona said.

Eyewitness News reached out to HISD but did not receive a response. METRO said it is investigating the matter.
