Mo. Police officer in head-on collision during pursuit

A Missouri police officer was seriously injured after a head-on collision with a driver fleeing a traffic stop Thursday morning.

The incident happened just after 5 a.m. when Independence police attempted to stop a driver on Interstate 470 near Interstate 70. KCTV-TV reports. A chase ensued along Interstate 70, but the driver would not stop.

While on an off-ramp, the driver made a U-turn and gave chase. The driver’s vehicle collided head-on with an Independence police cruiser.

The driver was taken to hospital, where he later died. An officer in the cruiser was also rushed to the hospital. No details have been released about the seriously injured officer’s condition.

The police are investigating the incident.
