Rapid City man shot by police after allegedly pointing a gun at Pizza Hut officers

RAPID CITY, SD (KOTA) – On Friday around 2:20 p.m., Rapid City police officers were called to Pizza Hut at the intersection of Haines Avenue and Anamosa Street for a report of an armed man threatening people with a firearm.

Police found the man in a first-floor apartment, part of The Place in Hainesway, where he allegedly continued to point a gun at bystanders.

RCPD says officers urged the man to surrender and were prepared to use non-lethal weapons to end the developing standoff, but the man allegedly escalated the situation.

“At some point during this altercation, the male pointed a handgun through a window at a police officer,” Rapid City Police Chief Don Hedrick said. “The police officer shot the person holding the gun and pointed it at him.”

Hedrick said the officer fired only one shot, wounding the man. The man reportedly died after being taken to hospital.

We will provide more details as information becomes available.
