How is Prithvi Shaw doing: The Australian coach doesn’t want Sam Konstas to be rushed

Renowned Australian batting coach Neil D’Costa is against the idea of rushing young opening batsman Sam Konstas into international cricket and believes Cricket Australia (CA) should take the example of India’s Prithvi Shaw lightly. Konstas has been in great form during the ongoing Sheffield Shield tournament.

The 19-year-old has so far scored 302 runs from two matches for New South Wales in the current season, at an average of 75.50, with two centuries to his name. Konstas’ stellar form has sparked talks to quickly include him in the Australian Test squad for the upcoming five-match Test series against India.

However, Neil D’Costa believes that early exposure to Test cricket could shorten his career from 100 matches to just ten.

“He could be a good player for 100 Tests. If they put him in now, he might only play 10 Tests. Let him understand the grounds (in Australia), understand the flows (of the game), understand himself and understand the game If he’s good enough, he’ll get the points and he’ll be in the team a bit,” D’Costa told the Sydney Morning Herald.

It’s just ridiculous to rush him in. How’s Prithvi Shaw?: D’Costa

Later in his speech, D’Costa called the idea “ridiculous,” giving the example of Prithvi Shaw.

“It’s just ridiculous (talking about rushing him). How is Prithvi Shaw? I could see his weaknesses before he went in,” he added.

Remarkably, touted as the next Sachin Tendulkar, Shaw got his career off to a great start with his Century On Test debut against the West Indies in 2018 and also won Player of the Match. He finished as the highest runscorer of his debut series with 237 runs from three innings. However, despite a promising start, he failed to secure his place in the team in the following innings and did not play for the country in the last three years.

Recently, Shaw was also dropped from Mumbai’s Ranji Trophy squad for fitness and disciplinary issues. That’s why the 24-year-old has failed to fulfill his potential so far in his career.
