Mike Williams’ tenure with the New York Jets may not be as close to an end as it seemed after the team acquired Davante Adams.

According to ESPN’s Jeremy Fowleris there “a chance” Williams could remain with the Jets past the Nov. 5 trade deadline now that Allen Lazard has been placed on injured reserve.

After the Jets traded for Adams on October 15, Williams skipped their first practice of the week for what the team said were personal reasons. That was him back at their location the next day, despite not having done much work in the field.

Professional football conversations Mike Florio reported on the same day of the Adams deal that Williams was being traded by the Jets.

It made sense that he would be the odd man out if a move were to happen, as Adams and Lazard already had established chemistry with Aaron Rodgers when they were teammates on the Green Bay Packers.

Even if there were rumbling that teams called the Jets about Garrett Wilson, it wouldn’t make sense for them to deal with him unless they got an absurd offer that was too good to pass up.

Lazard it was placed on injured reserve ahead of Thursday’s game against the Houston Texans. He suffered a pectoral injury during the Jets’ Week 7 loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers. The 28-year-old will miss at least three more games before he can be activated via IR.

Williams has seen more playing time over the last two games when Lazard has been unavailable, but he hasn’t really been a factor. The 30-year-old played 41 clicks against the Texans – his most since Week 5 – but finished with just one catch for six yards on two targets.

The Jets only pay Williams $1.3 million in base salary, so it wouldn’t cost much to move him if they wanted to go that route. But Lazard’s absence for at least the next three games could make him more valuable to them than what they would get back in a trade.
