CCCU will continue to work with BYU – Deseret News

This week the Desert News reported about a court ruling for religious colleges and universities that included some high-level joint efforts between evangelicals and Latter-day Saints.

The 9th Circuit Court of Appeals decision protected federal funding for students at religious schools, a victory for the Council of Christian Colleges and Universities, which spent $1 million defending it, and for the Brigham General Counsel’s office Young University, which wrote a friend-of-the-court letter in support of CCCU.

The Deseret News story said the win was considered the linchpin in the legacy of recently retired CCCU leader Shirley Hoogstra.

There is more to the story.

The new CCCU president said he will continue his decade-long partnership with BYU and The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

David Hoag, the new president, said he appreciates the relationships Hoogstra maintains with senior Latter-day Saint leaders and the Church’s commissioner of education, Elder Clark G. Gilbert, a General Seventy.

Hoag specifically pointed to the Latter-day Saint Latter-day Saint Church Education System model, which has an umbrella board of education that leads six institutions: BYU, BYU-Idaho, BYU-Pathway Worldwide, BYU-Hawaii, Ensign College and Seminaries & Institutes.

Hoag said this model could be a boon to evangelical colleges and universities that could work together in the same way as like-minded institutions. Not only would it provide cost-efficiency at a time when rising prices are making private school education more challenging for parents and students, but the CES system also makes it easier to pass the Department of Education’s thresholds for Title IX protection for religious schools to achieve, as a This factor shows that a school is controlled by a religious organization.

He indicated that he will continue the CCCU’s work with Steve Sandberg, BYU’s general counsel, whose office provides advice and support on legal issues.

The two CCCU presidents sat down with the Deseret News at Elder Gilbert’s office after meeting with a senior church leader and the church commissioner.

Like Hoogstra, Hoag also said Elder Gilbert has helped key players work with CCCU and Latter-day Saint schools such as Yeshiva University, Catholic University and Georgetown.

Others include Notre Dame and Baylor, which led Hoag to joke about Elder Gilbert’s enjoyment of college football.

“I don’t know,” Hoag said with a laugh, “if he’s trying to get playoff tickets or what he’s doing.”

Don’t miss reading this report of the director’s forum speech “The Chosen” at BYU. He tells a great story of personal failure that led to the success of ‘The Chosen’.

The first album I ever bought was Billy Joel’s ‘Glass Houses’. Here’s a story about the mansion he hated as a poor kid and then bought as a rich musician. He is asking for almost 50 million dollars. I would sell it too if I was in debt $500,000 per year in property taxes.

Who else enjoys BYU football? an 8-0 record?
