Two South Dakota inmates attack two correctional officers, punishable by up to 100 years in prison

RAPID CITY, SD (KOTA) – The South Dakota Attorney General’s office announced that two inmates have been found guilty of assaulting two inmates at the South Dakota prison in 2023.

Lester Monroe, 49, and Kyle Jones, 31, were both found guilty of attempted first-degree murder of a law enforcement officer and corrections officer.

The August 24, 2023 incident occurred in Unit D of the Jameson Annex in Sioux Falls.

Both officers were treated and released.

Monroe is serving a prison sentence for simple assault on Minnehaha County law enforcement officers and receiving/transferring a stolen vehicle from Bennett County.

Jones is serving a prison sentence for first-degree manslaughter, eluding a police officer and unauthorized ingestion of a controlled substance, all out of Minnehaha County.

They face a prison sentence of up to 100 years and double the maximum sentence.

A sentencing date has yet to be set.
