Trooper seriously injured after being struck by a pickup in Upstate NY, driver in custody

Colonie, NY – An upstate New York trooper was seriously injured Saturday after he was struck by a pickup truck, troopers said.

The officer stopped a driver on southbound I-87 (Northway) about 12:28 p.m. just before Exit 6-7 in Colonie, said Trooper Stephanie L. O’Neil, a state police spokesperson.

Due to a traffic law violation, the vehicle had to be towed, O’Neil said. A tow truck arrived and the officer and tow truck operator were standing outside their vehicles when a passing pickup struck them both, she said.

The tow truck driver suffered minor injuries and was transported for evaluation, she said. The soldier suffered serious injuries and remains under evaluation at Albany Medical Center, she said.

The driver of the pickup stopped and called 911 along with several witnesses. The driver is in custody, she said.
