Utah Tech assault suspect caught on camera running away after police arrive

Utah Tech Police have arrested a sexual assault suspect who was caught on camera running from the scene.

Police have confirmed that the victims of Friday morning’s attacks are young female students living in campus housing.

Following a Halloween event on campus, a former student allegedly gained unauthorized access to dormitories, raising serious concerns about student safety.

KUTV spoke with Police Chief Wes LiCalzi about the ongoing investigation and the university’s response to support students and improve campus safety.

According to police, the suspect – 22-year-old Alex Barajas – used a key card to gain access to a campus building and enter three separate dormitories in Campus View Suites I.

Utah Tech students Noah and Hunter expressed shock over the incidents.

“It’s just horrible,” Noah said.

“It’s something that should absolutely never happen,” Hunter said. ‘It is of course disappointing to hear. It’s something that needs to be resolved.”

Police reports indicated that Barajas allegedly assaulted three female students around 3 a.m. after a Halloween dance.

LiCalzi explained that the first call came from one of the victims, and when police arrived, two more victims came forward.

“The other two had already taken place. And when the officer arrived, very quickly, the suspect. . . fled through another exit,” Licalzi said.

Although the building requires key card entry, LiCalzi noted that the individual dorms were likely unlocked, allowing the suspect to gain entry. The victims lived on the same student floor, but it is unclear whether they knew each other personally.

“What they need now is clearly support,” LiCalzi said. “We spent time talking to the parents and the different resources they have, and arranging trauma-informed interviews.”

The police chief also emphasized the importance of campus safety and urged students to remain vigilant.

“We have tried to make it as easy as possible for you to call us. We just need that call to help,” he said. “Situational awareness is key; Being aware of your surroundings can make a big difference.”

Anyone with additional information regarding this incident is encouraged to contact the Utah Tech Police Department at 435-627-4300.

Students affected by the events or looking for support can access counseling and resources at Utah Tech’s Booth Wellness Center by walking in or calling 435-652-7755.

The suspect has a previous criminal record, but not in college. He faces three charges of rape, three charges of burglary, two charges of indecent exposure and one charge of criminal trespass to a dwelling.

Utah Tech Police continues to investigate and additional updates will be provided as they become available.
