LG election: Police arrest Abia lawmaker, details emerge

  • Police have reportedly arrested the lawmaker representing Ohafia South State Constituency in the Abia State House of Representatives, Hon. Kalu Mba Nwoke
  • Eyewitnesses stated that security forces attacked the lawmaker and his phone was destroyed before being taken to an unknown destination
  • A Labor Party leader who spoke on condition of anonymity alleged that the Deputy Governor, Ikechukwu Emetu, and the lawmaker were at loggerheads over the candidates for the council.

Hon. Kalu Mba Nwoke, the representative of Ohafia South State Constituency in Abia State House of Representativeshas been arrested by police for allegedly attempting to disrupt the local government elections in Ohafia council area.

Eyewitnesses claim that the lawmaker was attacked by police, who also destroyed his phone before taking him to an unknown destination.

According to Forefrontthe arrest is believed to have been orchestrated by the state’s deputy governor, Engr. Ikechukwu Emetu, who hails from the same Ohafia council area as the lawmaker.

A Labor Party The Ohafia Council leader, who wished to remain anonymous, revealed that the deputy governor and the lawmaker are at odds over the selection of candidates for the local government elections.

Police have not yet released an official statement on the case. Maureen Chinaka, the police public relations officer for Abijah stands Command promised to provide more information.

Update on Abia LG elections

Meanwhile, reports are emerging of widespread problems with election results in the seventeen council areas. Chief Emeka Adiele, chairmanship candidate of the Labor Party in Ukwa West Council Area, alleged that no result sheets had been distributed in his region.

Likewise, Hon. Ugwumba Adiele, the PDP chairman of Ukwa East council, alleged that a rival party manipulated the election results against him.
