Two teens killed in fiery crash in Riverside, another seriously injured

Two teenagers were killed and another seriously injured Saturday after an early morning crash in Riverside after police say the driver ran a red light.

It happened just before 6 a.m. near the intersection of Wood Road and Van Buren Boulevard. When emergency services arrived on the scene, they found one of the cars involved in the accident on fire.

Once the fire was extinguished, officials found two people – a 17-year-old boy and an 18-year-old girl – dead. Another 17-year-old boy, who police said was in the backseat during the crash, was seriously injured. Paramedics took him to hospital.

Officials investigating the crash said the car the teens were in was “traveling north on Wood Road at a high rate of speed” when the driver ran a red light at the intersection. A Scion driver was driving past Van Buren when his car collided with the teens, causing their car to crash into a light pole, utility pole and tree before bursting into flames.

The driver of the Scion was not injured in the accident. Police say he is cooperating with investigators.

Police have not identified the two teenagers killed in the crash because authorities have not notified their families. Investigators suspect drugs and alcohol played a role in the crash.
