The second day of the Breeders’ Cup consisted of nine races, starting with the Filly & Mare Sprint and ending with the Dirt Mile. In between, the crown jewel event of the Breeders’ Cup, the Classic, went down with a $7 million purse in tow.

This year the Breeders’ Cup took place at the Del Mar Racetrack in Del Mar, California. A total of $34 million in purses and prizes will be paid out during the two-day event.

Here’s a look at the day’s results, purses, payouts and highlights.

Filly & Mare Sprint ($1 million purse)

1. Soul of an Angel ($520,000 wallet share): Win ($41.60), Place ($9.80), Show ($8.40)

2. Society ($170,000): Place ($5.80), Show ($4.20)

3. Pleasant ($90,000): Show ($8.20)

Soul of an Angel finished 12-1 victorious after an attack from far outside. She narrowly defeated Society, who held the lead on the inside rail for almost the entire back stretch before Soul of an Angel finished furiously.

Turf sprint ($1 million wallet)

1. Starlust ($520,000 wallet share): Win ($69.20), Place ($27.20), Show ($14.60)

2. Motorious ($170,000): Place ($11.00), Show ($7.20)

3. Ag Bullet ($90,000): Show ($6.80)

Jockey Rossa Ryan had the ride of his life here and guided Starlust to victory 30-1 by dividing the horse between two competitors further along the route and emerging victorious. Ryan called it a “perfect opening” afterwards in a post-race interview with Carlos Morales.

An investigation followed, but the result was upheld.

What a star, one of Europe’s best young jockeys who has retained Rossa Ryan #Starlust calm in the beginning, and delivered it perfectly. A brilliantly timed run to get the #TurfSprint. An investigation is underway – let’s hope the result holds up.

Distaff ($2 million purse)

1. Thorpedo Anna ($1,040,000 purse share): Win ($2.80), Place ($2.40), Show ($2.10)

2. Raging Sea ($340,000): Place ($3.00), Show ($2.40)

3. Candied ($180,000): Show ($2.80)

Leaving no doubt about the winner of this race, Thorpedo Anna controlled the race and held off Raging Sea all the way for a comfortable win. This marked another victory in a phenomenal year for Thorpedo Anna, who won six of the seven events, including the Kentucky Oaks and Travers Stakes.

1. Rebel’s Romance ($2.6 million wallet share): Win ($5.80), Place ($4.40), Show ($3.20)

2. Rousham Park ($850,000): Place ($15.60), Show ($11.60)

3. Shahryar ($450,000): Show ($4.80)

Rebel’s Romance took the lead for the top of the stretch and took a resounding lead in the closing moments before Rousham Park tried to steal the win before the finish. In the end, Rebel’s Romance did just enough for the win, winning this event for the second time in three years.

Classic: ($7 million wallet)

1. Sierra Leone ($3,640,000 wallet share): Win ($15.80), Place ($5.60), Show ($3.60)

2. Savagery ($1,190,000): Place ($4.40), Show ($3.20)

3. Forever Young ($630,000): Show ($3.60)

At 40-1, Derma Sotogake led for much of the race before 5-2 favorite Fierceness took over. But Sierra Leone, at 6-1, attacked hard from the outside and beat Fiercness by more than a length. It was a sensational race for Sierra Leone, runner-up in this year’s Kentucky Derby.

Filly & Mare Turf ($2 million purse)

1. Moira ($1,040,000 wallet share): Win ($13.60), Place ($5.80), Show ($4.20)

2. Cinderella’s Dream ($340,000): place ($4.60), show ($3.40)

3. Didia ($180,000): Show ($7.00)

Moira advanced past Full Count Felicia from the outside on the back stretch and held on for the win. Full Count Felicia was the leader for almost the entire race, but lost steam along the way and ultimately finished outside the top six. But thanks to 5-1 Moira for a sensational race, and jockey Flavien Prat, who won back-to-back races after riding Sierra Leone to victory. Cinderella’s Dream, the pre-race favorite, finished second.

Sprint ($2 million wallet)

1. Straight No Chaser ($1,040,000 wallet share): Win ($14.20), Place ($7.60), Show ($5.00)

2. Bentornato ($340,000): Place ($23.80), Show ($12.60)

3. Mullikin ($180,000): Show ($3.60)

This was a fantastic two-horse race between 6-1 Straight No Chaser and 25-1 longshot Bentornato. The federal judge led most of the race, but gave way to the two former horses during a showdown on the stretch. In the end, Straight No Chaser charged hard from the outside and won by almost one length.

1. Beyond Appearance ($1,040,000 wallet share): Win ($15.80), Place ($6.40), Show ($3.60)

2. Johannes ($340,000): Place ($5.20), Show ($3.60)

3. Mullikin ($180,000): Show ($2.80)

More Than Looks charged at the very back of the pack and emerged victorious, narrowly beating Johannes for the win. It was an incredible late kick for the 6-1 horse ridden by Jose Ortiz, who did a fantastic job here.

Dirt Mile ($2 million purse)

1. Full Serrano ($1,040,000 purse share): Win ($28.80), Place ($12.40), Show ($7.40)

2. Post Time ($340,000): Place ($7.60), Show ($4.40)

3. Domestic Product ($180,000): Show ($3.20)

Post Time went one step further as 15-1 Full Serrano continued his lucrative move from Argentina to the US as he finished strongly to claim victory in the final championship race of the evening.
