The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office releases a statement after altercation between police and fans goes viral

The Professional Standards Division of the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office has released a statement regarding an altercation that occurred between police offers and fans during the Florida-Georgia game Saturday evening.

Video shared on social media shows several officers throwing punches at fans in the stands. It’s unclear at this time what led to that use of force by the officers, although there appears to be some sort of dispute in the stands, but here is video from the scene at EverBank Stadium in Jacksonville:

Within hours of the game ending, a statement was released by the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office Professional Standards Division. The organization says it is “aware of the videos circulating among the crowd” and that administrative reviews of the incident “are being opened.”

The agency says it will make no further comment until “all the facts are known” on the matter.

As for the match itself, Georgia had the upper hand 34-20. The Bulldogs didn’t take their first lead of the game until the second half, but were able to pull away from Florida with a pair of touchdowns in the final minutes of the game.
