The government recently issued a warning about the increasing prevalence of cyber fraud, especially in the context of traffic challenge scams. According to the Ministry of Information Technology, these fraudulent schemes have resulted in significant financial losses to numerous individuals, amounting to lakhs of rupees. The scammers’ modus operandi usually involves sending a fabricated link to individuals, with the intention of facilitating payment of e-challans, thereby luring the victims into cheating.

The government has warned the public that individuals are receiving misleading messages, emails or notifications of false applications claiming alleged violations of road rules. These communications often instruct recipients to transfer payment for alleged outstanding e-challans. The messages contain fraudulent links that direct users to websites designed to mimic official government portals. Furthermore, there have been cases where cybercriminals distributed deceptive apps via links embedded in these messages or emails, further ensnaring unsuspecting individuals.

How does this new scam work?

The tactics used by these malicious actors include instilling fear in potential victims by issuing threats through fraudulent messages. Such messages may claim that vehicles will be seized if the alleged challan is not resolved immediately, prompting victims to act without adequate supervision.

To specifically exploit individuals, hackers use phishing techniques, sending fake links via text message or email that, when opened, lead to websites that closely resemble legitimate government platforms. This replication of official sites is intended to deceive individuals, who may unknowingly provide sensitive information, making them vulnerable to financial exploitation.

How to mitigate this?

To limit the risk of falling prey to these scams, individuals must adhere to several precautionary measures. It is crucial not to click on links in unsolicited messages or emails. Verification of the sender’s identity is essential before sharing personal or financial information. Individuals should ignore any communication where the sender’s authenticity has not been verified. In cases where a link is accidentally opened, it is imperative to investigate the legitimacy of the website before taking further action.

Official communications regarding e-challans or government notifications are distributed from recognizable and verified email addresses. Individuals are therefore advised to confirm the credibility of the sender’s email address and phone number before engaging with the content. Furthermore, personal information, including banking information, should never be disclosed to unknown entities, promoting a more secure digital environment.
