Taxi driver arrested for alleged murder of 24-year-old nursing student

  • The drama started when Nanjela asked the taxi driver to stop at her gate

A Taxi driver has been arrested in connection with the brutal murder of a female ZIPS Nursing School student.

Mwebantu reports this the deceased student has been identified as 24-year-old Silvia Nanjela.

The arrest follows a disturbing incident that took place in the early hours of the morning and left the community in shock.

According to deputy police spokesperson Godfrey Chilabi, the tragedy started when Nanjela and a friend booked a taxi in the Twin Palm area around 2am.

The friend left the vehicle in Kamwala, while Nanjela continued alone to her destination in Kamwala South.

Upon arrival at her home, she asked the driver to stop at her gate.

As she was preparing to pay, the driver allegedly attacked her and hit her on the head with an empty bottle.

Although Nanjela called for help, the driver started the car and tried to drive away with her still inside.

Nanjela continued to struggle but the driver allegedly attacked her again with another bottle.

During her attempt to escape, she became entangled in the seat belt, causing the driver to lose control of the vehicle and fall into a drainage ditch.

A local resident, who heard the commotion, rushed to help.

Startled, the driver grabbed Nanjela’s handbag and fled the scene, leaving his Toyota Vitz behind with the keys still in the ignition.

Police arrived on the scene shortly afterwards and found Nanjela seriously injured from multiple head wounds.

She was rushed to University Teaching Hospital where she was admitted but unfortunately succumbed to her injuries after three days.

After investigation, the police arrested the suspect, who is now in custody.

The vehicle has been seized and the suspect is expected to appear in court soon charged with the brutal murder of the young nursing student.
