An additional 5,000 soldiers are being deployed to the flooded Valencia region to support the “largest operation of the armed forces in Spain in peacetime”, Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez said.

Before-and-after satellite images have emerged showing the extent of the destruction in Valencia. After Tuesday’s heavy rains, large areas of land are covered in a brown swamp of muddy water.

Officials said the death toll was likely to continue rising, with most deaths so far in Valencia, the eastern region that bore the brunt of the destruction.

Chilly weather warnings are in force for the east coast of Spain and the western border with Portugal. The rain is expected to continue until the weekend.

The worst of the storm is over in Mallorca

According to local media reports, Mallorca’s worst storm has passed, despite much of the island being hit by heavy rain on Friday evening.

Javier Bonet, the first deputy mayor of the Majorcan capital Palma, urged locals and tourists on Friday to only leave their homes if it is “absolutely necessary”.

“We are not on red alert, but it is essential to warn the population to avoid greater risks,” he added.

But the Mallorca Daily Bulletin reports that the “storm is subsiding” and that “emergency services believe the worst of the cold wave is over”.

Emergency services are still advising extreme caution as rain is still possible on Saturday.
