Iranians protest against Israel and the US in Tehran

People in the Iranian capital Tehran demonstrated on Sunday against Israel and its backer, the United States. The protest came after Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei warned of retaliation for last month’s Israeli attack.

The meeting marked the 45th anniversary of the takeover of the US embassy by Iranian students, which led to a hostage crisis.

The demonstrators carried photos of the leaders of the Islamist group Hamas and the Lebanon-based Shiite Muslim group Hezbollah, who were killed by the Israeli army.

They condemned Israel for attacking military facilities in Iran and criticized the US for supporting Israeli operations.

A 60-year-old protester said Israel has engaged in US-backed acts of aggression to threaten the Iranians, and that Iran must retaliate seriously.

Some protesters expressed concern that former US President Donald Trump could soon be re-elected. Trump took a tough stance on Iran during his time in office.

An 18-year-old man said many Iranians believe Trump should never become president again.
