Northview Marching Band members uninjured after pile-up that killed four people and injured 17

WEBBERVILLE, Mich. – Four people are dead and 17 others are in the hospital after a fiery crash late Saturday night involving the supporter of a local high school marching band.

According to a Facebook post from the Northview Band Boosters, their students are safe after the massive pileup that occurred in the area of I-96 near the M-52 freeway in Webberville.

In a statement on X, Michigan State Police said the crash occurred Saturday around 11:42 p.m. Troopers had just finished working with consumer energy to install power lines, and the highway was reopened. Many cars were standing still on the road.

A semi with a trailer was traveling west in the left lane approaching traffic. MSP says they believe the driver did not see that the cars were stopped and was unable to stop in time. The truck struck several vehicles, causing a pileup that officers said involved as many as 15 vehicles, some of which (including the semi) hit hard enough that they burst into flames.

MSP says at least 17 people were seriously injured and hospitalized, and four people have been confirmed dead. Their identities have yet to be released.

Northview Band Boosters says no one from the band was injured in the incident, but a trailer containing instruments was damaged. The band was on its way home from the state finals in Detroit.

MSP tells FOX 17 that both westbound and eastbound I-96 will need to be closed while crews work to clear the roadway. The viaduct is being inspected by MDOT for any fire damage.
