GTA 6 fans are looking to the moon again, and this time I believe them

GTA6 can’t come soon enough. Since last year’s reveal trailer, the internet has been ablaze with analysis, theories and conjecture. Will social media play a role in the story? Who are Lucia and Jason? And why on earth does everyone continue to be crazy about the phases of the moon? Until we get our hands on the next Grand Theft Auto, I’m afraid many of these questions will remain unanswered. Still, the wait hasn’t stopped fans from going overboard with theories again. This time, however, I’m inclined to believe them.

First a summary. Before Rockstar the Grand Theft Auto 6 trailertheories about the game were everywhere. If you put your tinfoil hat on tight enough, you might squint at some of them sandbox game promotional materials from the creator for clues. A infamous image of the 2023 GTA Online Vinewood board became the subject of such theories. Players thought that the V and I in the image were suspiciously illuminated (yielding the Roman numeral VI), and that the phase of the moon in the image hinted at the moment when we would learn more about GTA6.

That moon was a waning moon. Coincidentally (or purposefully, depending on which side of the fence you fall on), Rockstar teased the first GTA 6 trailer on Friday, December 1, where the moon was once again a waning moon. Now we come to today and you won’t believe it; the latest official GTA Online image from Rockstar has the moon in it. Is the GTA 6 release date is about to be revealed? Maybe.

Again, it’s a declining gibbous. Can we watch a tease for the second GTA 6 trailer? Or maybe even a release date? At this point I’m not sure, but the game’s community is full of ideas. The next waning gibbous starts on Monday, November 17 and ends on Wednesday, November 20, so some think we’ll learn more then. The above image even makes a VI over the Moon with the telephone wires. Is that also a coincidence? Probably.

One post on Reddit even suggests we might learn more about GTA 6 before the next waning gibbous begins. She posit that two announcements, one for the 2018 delay of Red Dead Redemption 2 and one for the first GTA 6 trailer tease, happened on the same day as Take-Two’s quarterly results. The company’s next call will be on Wednesday, November 6, just days after these dwindling gibbous were once again shown off in GTA promotional materials.

If you want that tin foil hat to start cutting off circulation to your head, things get even weirder. Tom Petty’s Love Is A Long Road plays during the first GTA 6 trailer and features the line “I’d wait for the moon.” Either this is a series of incredibly strange coincidences, or someone at Rockstar keeps teasing us.

At this point the wild theories start to convince me. Even if they’re wrong, I feel like Rockstar knows exactly what it’s doing. At the same time, this could all be a pipe dream. Maybe we’re all reading a little too much into JPGs of the moon. Anyway, I’d like to think Rockstar is teasing us.
