Roland Wycherley faces a bid to resign as Shrewsbury Town chairman is snubbed

The chairman of almost 30 years relieves head coach Hurst and assistant coach Chris Doig of their duties after a poor start to the season.

An earlier statement from the club revealed that they had an emergency board meeting on Sunday morning following the team’s 2-1 defeat to Salford in the FA Cup.

And at that meeting, Wycherley attempted to resign from his role as chairman – something that was subsequently rejected.

He said: “This morning at our emergency Council meeting I tendered my immediate resignation as Chairman, but this was rejected by the Board because despite all the positive changes we are making to reduce losses – without my current financial support – wouldn’t do that. can continue to fulfill our obligations.

“As a result of that meeting we were very disappointed to have to let Paul Hurst and Chris Doig leave as I was personally desperate for them to succeed, but if my 28 years at the helm have taught me anything it is that nothing is guaranteed in the football.

“While we have maintained a budget that is affordable for our revenues as a club, the external landscape of League One finances has changed immeasurably, which is why I am more determined than ever to find a successor.

“Over the past two seasons, I have stated in my AGM chairman’s statement that this has been the most challenging period of my tenure. This was due to previous stewardship I had placed my trust in, which unfortunately was not in charge of the situation. club in the direction I intended.

“I have recently appointed my new vice-chairman and a new board, and we are already making great strides to return us to a sustainable position as we seek to secure new investment.”

And Wycherley said they are in advanced negotiations with a party looking to buy the club.

He said: “As we move forward, I would like to reiterate that we are in advanced negotiations to secure my succession with a party that I believe would be the very best for this football club.”
