Queen Letizia in tears during emotional visit to Valencia

Queen Letizia in tears during emotional visit to Valencia

It’s been a difficult few days for Spain, with deadly floods killing more than 200 people in Valencia.

Keen to support their country, King Felipe and Queen Letizia visited the areas worst affected by the floods on Sunday. The trip turned violent when crowds threw mud at Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez, who was walking next to the royal couple.

Although King Felipe and Queen Letizia were also affected by the attack, the anger was mainly focused on politicians and the Spanish government, who locals say did not provide enough aid to the area.

Despite the anger towards Sánchez, residents were happy to see the royal family. Queen Letizia spoke to a local woman, holding her hand and comforting her as she cried.

Speaking to another local resident, Queen Letizia could be seen with her head in her hands, herself moved to tears by the devastation.

Ahead of their visit, the representative of the Spanish royal family took to the family’s Instagram to express their gratitude for the support their country has received, writing: “Our deep gratitude for the messages of condolence, comfort, support and solidarity with the Spanish people due to the devastating consequences of DANA.”

After their visit, another message was posted on social media, stating: “The Royal Family visited this morning the municipality of Paiporta (Valencia), one of the places seriously affected by the terrible DANA that we have suffered in our country .”

The note explained the reason for their visit and continued: “They wanted to be close to neighbors, listen to them and know their situation, and also thank the work of the emergency services, state, regional and local armed forces and security forces, civil protection and NGOs who are working tirelessly to rescue and restore basic services in the affected areas, and with whom the Royal Family has been in constant contact during these days.”

A carousel of photos accompanied the heartfelt message, which showed the couple hugging the crowd and looking emotional, with mud splattered on their clothes in several touching photos.

Although their visit proved to be controversial, the family’s supporters sent messages of appreciation and admiration on social media, writing: ‘While politicians and presidents flee, Their Majesties remain to endure the mud and fear of the crowd, to deal with to talk to the displaced and to comfort the people. Desperate, long live the king, long live the queen, long live Spain!”

We hope the visit has brought comfort to those affected by the flood.
