EAU CLAIRE, Mich. (WNDU) – The Berrien County Sheriff’s Office has identified the victim and suspect of a fatal shooting early Saturday morning in Eau Claire.

Officers were called to the intersection of Main Street and Elm Street just before 12:45 p.m.

When they arrived, they said they found two male victims. One of them was unresponsive and had life-threatening injuries, while the other had non-life-threatening injuries.

Both victims were taken to hospital, where one of them later died. That victim has since been identified as 36-year-old Chad Medlin of Benton Harbor.

The Berrien County Sheriff’s Office tells us Medlin was an Eau Claire firefighter. The Eau Claire Fire Department also confirmed this in a Facebook post.

“Today is a sad day for our department. We have lost a friend. A fellow firefighter. Someone who served his country,” said Norm Carl, chief of the Eau Claire Fire Department. “We will do the work because that is who we are and who you would want us to be. But each step will be just a little bit harder. Watch over us brother, Chad Medlin, we will take it from here.

Police say with the help of witnesses they were able to quickly identify 47-year-old Rigoberto Gomez of Eau Claire as a suspect. Gomez was taken into custody and is being held in the Berrien County Jail on multiple charges.
