NASU and SSANU suspend the strike for one month

The Non-Academic Staff Union, NASU, of Educational and Associated Institutions and the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities, SSANU, have suspended their nationwide strike indefinitely.

NASU and SSANU had declared a month-long nationwide strike over withheld salaries.

In a joint statement on Sunday, the agencies said the suspended strike would come into effect on Tuesday, November 5, 2024.

The statement was signed by Prince Peters Adeyemi, Secretary General of NASU and Comrade Mohammed Ibrahim, National President of SSANU.

The statement reads: “The National Leadership of the Joint Action Committee, JAC, of ​​NASU and SSANU recognizes and commends our members in the universities and inter-university centers for their unwavering determination, unwavering determination and steadfast support for the ongoing strike action.

“You will recall that the sustained strike action forced upon us commenced on Monday, October 28, 2024 as a result of the government’s insensitivity to the plight of our members regarding our legitimate demands.

“During this industrial struggle, we have had several extensive and in-depth deliberations with the officials of the Federal Government of Nigeria including the new Minister of Education, the Minister of Finance, the outgoing Minister of State for Education, the Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Education , the Accountant General of the Federation and the leadership of the Ministry of State Services

“These high-level agreements culminated in obtaining an irrevocable commitment from the Federal Government that the two months of the four months of withheld salaries would be paid in installments, one month by the end of October 2024 (which has largely happened), and then the second month must be paid no later than the end of November 2024.

“Further to the above and in view of the level of commitment shown by the new Minister and the leadership of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the leadership of JAC, after various contacts and other patriotic considerations, hereby directs that the continued strike for is suspended indefinitely. for one month, starting from Tuesday, November 5, 2024.

“Industry leaders from both NASU and SSANU are hereby directed to convene a joint conference on their respective campuses on Monday, November 4, 2024 and to be closely involved in these developments and urge them to continue the work on Tuesday, November 5 to resume in 2024.

“We would also like to reiterate that discussions on the remaining two months, N50 billion earned allowances, 25/35 percent arrears and wage allocation have been reviewed and are undergoing deliberations.”
