NBA reopens investigation into Jaxson Hayes after release of new video

The NBA reopens an investigation surrounding a July 2021 incident involving Jaxson Hayes.

In new video footage obtained by TMZthe Los Angeles Lakers center, 24, is involved in a physical altercation with his then-girlfriend Sofia Jamora, who was involved in a dispute over their respective dogs.

The incident occurred hours before he was arrested that same evening for an altercation with the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD).

After the video was shared, the NBA responded in a statement, per ESPNwhich states: “As a result of the media report and video posted this morning, we are reopening our investigation.”

A spokesperson for Hayes, meanwhile, told the newspaper: “There has already been an extensive investigation that we have been working with the league on, and as that investigation is reopened, we will continue to do so.”

The NBA did not immediately respond to PEOPLE’s request for comment. A representative for Hayes could not be reached.

In the security video footage, Hayes and Jamora can be heard arguing. At one point, Jamora says, “Stop. Let me go,” before the basketball player responds, “What the fuck is wrong with you?”

As the former couple then leaves the home, Jamora then appears to say in the video, “I’m not going to let you hit me again. What the fuck do I look like, a punching bag?” She also threatens to call the police on Hayes.

The video then shows Hayes, who played for the New Orlean Pelicans at the time, walking away from his ex-girlfriend before turning and apparently spitting at her.

After the dispute years ago, the LAPD had responded to a domestic disturbance report.

At the time, officers had asked Hayes to remain outside while they spoke with Jamora about the alleged incident, but the athlete was uncooperative and had attempted to re-enter the home several times.

“Officers used physical force to get Hayes to the ground, overcoming his resistance. Once on the ground, Hayes attempted to get up and continued to resist the officers. Officers used the taser in two ways, in addition to body weight and physical force during the altercation,” the LAPD said in an earlier statement.

According to NBC SportsJamora claimed that Hayes had previously abused her. She filed a lawsuit against the basketball player, who is still active.

The outlet reported that Hayes was charged with 12 felonies and sentenced to three years of probation, including community service and attending domestic violence classes.

At the time of the incident, Hayes was not facing any discipline from the NBA.

According to NBC Sports, Hayes and the Lakers are currently cooperating with the investigation.
