Four dead and 17 injured after a truck crashed into vehicles stuck in traffic

LANSING, MI (WILX/Gray News) – Four people are dead and 17 others injured after a truck crashed into vehicles stuck in traffic late Saturday evening.

The crash happened on I-96 in Ingham County, Michigan around 11:43 p.m.

According to Michigan State Police, the westbound lanes of I-96 were closed while crews installed power lines across the highway. When police reopened the lanes, several vehicles were still stationary when a truck crashed into the stationary vehicles.

Police suspect that approximately fifteen vehicles were involved in the accident.

According to authorities, the driver of the semi-trailer did not see that traffic was stopped and was unable to stop in time.

The truck and several other vehicles caught fire.

The 17 injured were all taken to hospitals with serious injuries.

I-96 near M-52 is expected to be closed indefinitely.
