On the heels of Cameron Post’s bad upbringingher 2018 coming-of-age drama about a teen sent to gay conversion therapy, the actress opened up about how some critics of the film viewed her role as an example of heterosexual actors playing LGBTQ+ characters.

“Really and truly?” Moretz responded during an interview with The independent. “Well, I think it’s important not to assume someone’s sexuality.”

Quoting the movie, she added, “I think it comes down to the line in the movie. (My character) says, ‘I don’t see myself as gay. I see myself as nothing.’ This is all societal pressure that we are labeled with. We are all human, we are trying to be with the people we fall in love with, and be the best person we can be. But don’t assume people’s sexuality .And don’t project your own problems onto them. Why don’t we let people be who they want to be?”
