One person has been injured in a shooting at Walmart in Wilmington

According to police reports, the suspect, who was allegedly trying to commit shoplifting, opened fire, prompting a quick police response. The individual has since been apprehended and authorities have confirmed there is no ongoing threat to the public.

A tragic shooting occurred Saturday evening at the Monkey Junction Walmart in Wilmington, leaving a male employee dead. New Hanover and Pender County District Attorney Rebecca Zimmer Donaldson confirmed the victim’s family will be notified, with the identity to be released at a later date.

The suspect, identified as Dean Michael Newman, reportedly attempted to commit shoplifting before brandishing a firearm and shooting the employee. He fled the scene, but was arrested in the parking lot. Fortunately, no other individuals were injured during the incident and authorities have assured the public that there is no ongoing threat.
