Migori: Boy from humble family who scored C+ in KCSE call for help to join campus

A student from Alendo, Kanyasa Migori Province is seeking financial support from well-wishers to join the University of East Africa, Baraton.

John Otieno is stranded at home after deferring his university admissions because his single mother could not afford the required tuition fees.

He scored an average grade of C+ in the 2023 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE).

Speak with TUKO.co.keOtieno’s guardian, Titus Bita, stated that Otieno comes from a very needy family familyand the mother survives on manual labor, working on people’s farms to make ends meet.

“The father is deceased; the mother does small jobs, such as working on people’s farms to buy food. The extended family also lives from hand to mouth, so no one inside can help pay his fees,” he said.

What is the cost for theology at Baraton University?

According to Bita, Otieno is expected to report in January 2024 with the full amount required for his admission.

He has been offered a place on the Bachelor of Art in Theology, a course that costs KSh 134,480, including tuition fees, administrative fees and boarding fees per trimester.

He will also have to pay CUE, bail money and orientation fees – all of which are payable once, amounting to KSh 5,000.

Bita said they plan to approach politicians, friends and Kenyans of good will from the region to help Otieno pursue his dreams.

“My pocket is not that deep either, but I will do my best to make sure this smart boy goes to school,” he stated

West Pokot girl who missed college admission gets help

In other news, TUKO.co.ke reported that a girl with disabilities from West Pokot who had failed to attend college received help after the government said it would reconsider its application.

Alpine Chepkorir scored C+, but when others joined the university, she stayed home due to a lack of fees.

Like many students from needy families, Chepkorir applied for funding from the Higher Education Institute Education Loans Board, but her application was reportedly rejected.
