Distressed swimmer dies after being pulled from water

A man died Sunday morning while swimming near the Boynton Inlet, officials said.

According to the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office, Manalapan Police received a 911 call at 10:32 a.m. from a beachgoer reporting a swimmer in distress near the inlet.

The area was about a quarter mile north of a non-lifeguard protected area.

The sheriff’s office said safety officers and medics from a nearby property rescued the man from the rough surf and current and administered CPR until Palm Beach County fire personnel arrived.

The swimmer was taken to Bethesda Hospital East, where he was pronounced dead by emergency room staff at 11:17 a.m.

The man’s identity is not known at this time, the sheriff’s office said.

An autopsy is planned to determine the cause of death.

In a separate incident a 19-year-old drowned while swimming at Pepper Park Beach in St. Lucie County on Sunday.
