Sean “Diddy” Combs’ mother said her son made a decision that upset her

Janice said her son developed a strong work ethic at a young age.

“He came home one day and told me he wanted to start a paper route,” she said The New Yorker in 2002. “That’s how he started. He always wanted to work and earn his money. We had a Cadillac car and a house, and he loved that life.”

Diddy studied at Howard Universitywhich his mother referred to as “the Black Harvard.” She was proud of his enrollment at the school, but he began to set his sights elsewhere. It wasn’t long before Diddy stopped working for Andre Harrell at Uptown Records. His mother, who was a teacher, disagreed.

“I was really disappointed about that,” Janice said. “Someone works day and night just to educate a child, and to have a roof over your head and a school uniform. He was a great student, and when he left college it was hard for me.”

He talked about his relationship with his mother

Diddy was grateful to his mother for everything she did for him growing up.

“(My mother) loves me so muchand she is so proud of me,” he said in a 2006 interview with Oprah Winfreyand added, “She almost killed herself to get me to go to private schools, to expose me to travel.” She made sure I never looked down on other people. She also lit a fire in me.”

He also appreciated the way she stayed by his side during his 2001 trial after a nightclub shooting.

“She wanted me to be bigger than my circumstances,” he said. “Throughout the process, she walked past me every step of the way.”

What has Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs’ mother said about the allegations against him?

Just as Janice supported her son in 2001, she supports him amid the hustle and bustle of recent allegations against him. Diddy is currently in prison on charges of sex trafficking and racketeering. In a statement, Janice said she feels “devastated and deeply saddened” by the allegations (via the BBC).

“It is heartbreaking to see my son not being judged based on the truth, but based on a story made up of lies,” she wrote.

While she added that she doesn’t think Diddy is “perfect,” she strongly believes he’s “not the monster they made him out to be.”

“My son may not have been entirely honest about certain things, such as denying that he had ever been violent toward an ex-girlfriend when hotel surveillance showed otherwise,” she said. “Sometimes the truth and a lie become so closely intertwined that it becomes terrifying to admit part of the story, especially if that truth is outside the norm or too complicated to believe. This is why I believe my son’s civil law team chose to settle the ex-girlfriend’s lawsuit instead of fighting it to the end, which resulted in a backlash when the federal government overturned this decision against my son by interpreting it as an admission of guilt. ”
