Man arrested for negligent discharge of a gun in Anderson

On October 29, a man was arrested in Anderson for negligence in discharging a firearm.

The Anderson Police Department (APD) says around 4:16 p.m., officers were called to the area around South Barney and Locust Road after someone called to report a shirtless man walking barefoot in the area with a gun strapped to his back.

On Barney Street at Marx Way, officers found a man matching the description, later identified as Jose Antonio Pena Alvarado, 32, of Cottonwood, with a loaded .22 caliber rifle tied to his pants with a string.

Officials say Pena Alvarado was heavily intoxicated and spoke only Spanish. Officers were able to talk to him minimally, which led him to comply with commands. Officers formed a contact team and used a ballistic shield to safely take Pena Alvarado into custody.

While officers were on scene, another person called to report hearing Pena Alvarado fire a round from the rifle near South Barney Street and I-5 before reloading it and walking north toward the location where he was found.

Pena Alvarado was arrested and booked into the Shasta County Jail on charges related to public intoxication, carrying a loaded firearm and negligent discharge of a firearm.
