Police hand over evidence in Russell Brand investigation to British prosecutors

Following an investigation by Channel 4’s Dispatches and The Sunday Times in September 2023, police received a number of reports of sexual offenses involving women in London and elsewhere in Britain, police said in a statement to AFP.

The television documentary aired claims from several women of rape, sexual assault and emotional abuse.

Brand, 49, has denied the alleged abuse, which allegedly took place between 2006 and 2013.

“A file of evidence has now been passed to the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS)” who will decide whether charges will be laid, the police statement said.

“As part of the investigation, a man in his 40s was questioned by officers on three occasions under caution,” police said, adding that these were related to a number of non-recent sexual offences.

“We have a team of dedicated officers providing specialist support to the women who have come forward,” said Chief Inspector Andy Furphy.

“We are committed to investigating sexual crimes, regardless of how long ago they may have occurred,” he added.

Brand rose to international fame as the former husband of pop star Katy Perry after building a career as a stand-up comedian with risqué routines, often about drugs and sex.
