Russell Brand posts cryptic tweet in which Met asks prosecutors to consider charges over claims of historical sex crimes

Russell Brand cryptically tweeted about ‘forgiveness’ just hours after it emerged that detectives investigating historic sexual offense allegations against him had passed a dossier of evidence to British prosecutors, MailOnline can reveal today.

The 49-year-old vehemently denies any wrongdoing and insists that although he was “very, very promiscuous” as a younger man, his sexual relations “were always consensual.”

Four women came forward in September last year to accuse the star of rape, sexual assault and emotional abuse. He was reportedly questioned by police three times under caution.

At 5pm on Saturday, Metropolitan Police Chief Inspector Andy Furphy said a file of evidence had been handed to the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) after a thirteen-month investigation.

The comedian and actor has not yet commented on the development in his case, but two hours later he tweeted: “Forgiveness is available to all of us.”

MailOnline has asked the star’s lawyer to comment on the development and his tweet.

Mr Brand turned to Christ in 2024 – and was famously baptized in the River Thames with his friend Bear Grylls at the end of April. Brand said he saw this spiritual moment as “an opportunity to leave the past behind” and “leave the sins behind.”

His tweet about forgiveness has been seized upon by his supporters, especially in the United States, where he has recently spent time.

Several tweeted, “Amen” in response to his forgiveness post. Another said: ‘Absolutely true.’

In September he led prayers while joining Tucker Carlson on a US tour and asked God to bring ‘unity’ to America through the presidential election.

The British comedian and thinker was once a supporter of British far-left socialist Jeremy Corbyn – now he is an outspoken supporter of Trump. His latest video on social media urges Americans to vote this week to “bring America closer to God,” which has been seized upon by Trump supporters.

Scotland Yard has asked the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) to consider laying charges against Mr Brand, 49.

The investigation came after four women made allegations of rape, sexual assault and emotional abuse against Mr Brand in September 2023.

The allegations span from 2006 to 2013, when the comedian worked as a presenter on BBC Radio 2 and Channel 4 and as an actor in Hollywood.

It came following a joint investigation launched by The Sunday Times, The Times and Channel 4’s Dispatches.

Mr Brand was first interviewed under caution on November 16, 2023, on three charges of sexual offenses after voluntarily attending a police station.

He was interviewed again on December 14 about allegations of a further six historical sexual offenses and a third interview took place on January 17 this year, The Times reported this.

Chief Inspector Andy Furphy, of the Metropolitan Police, said: ‘Our investigations are continuing and a file has now been transferred to the CPS.

“We have a team of dedicated officers providing specialist support to the women who have come forward.

‘We are committed to investigating sexual crimes, regardless of how long ago they occurred.’

Russell Brand denies any wrongdoing and has said all his sexual relationships were always consensual.

The comedian turned lifestyle guru, who also worked on BBC Radio 2 and BBC Radio 6 Music programs from 2006 to 2008, told former Fox News presenter Tucker Carlson in a YouTube video earlier this year that the claims against him were “very, were very hurtful’. ‘.

One of the first women to accuse Brand — named Alice to protect her identity — alleged she was in an “emotionally abusive and controlling relationship” with the comedian, then 31, for about three months as a teenager.

Alice, who has branded the star’s alleged behavior as ‘grooming’, claimed he would refer to her as ‘The Child’ throughout their relationship and that he gradually became ‘controlling and then emotionally and sexually abusive’.

‘I was at my father’s house and it was eleven o’clock at night. He texted me, I came up with a scenario where I said my friend was sick, and we would roleplay texting conversations. He had a whole script for me.”

Another woman alleged that Mr. Brand sexually assaulted her while she was working with him in LA. She claimed she repeatedly told him to get off her, and when he finally did, he “turned around.”

It was also alleged that another woman was sexually abused by Brand in Britain and she also accused him of being physically and emotionally abusive towards her.

In the wake of the scandal, a fifth woman filed a report with the Metropolitan Police, alleging she was sexually assaulted by the star in Soho, London, in 2003.

Another woman has accused Brand of locking her in a dressing room and pinning her to a couch with a “slick” look on his face.

The alleged incident, as reported in The Sun, is said to have taken place in 2008, when the comic was 33, after a performance in west London.

A woman also came forward to claim Brand exposed himself to her in an office where BBC Los Angeles operated in 2008, before going to record a program for Radio 2, where he appeared to joke about the alleged incident.

And another, who went by the name Sarah to protect her identity, claimed the cartoon character had left her feeling ‘vulnerable and intimidated’ after allegedly refusing to get her a taxi until she had performed a sex act.

In recent years, Mr Brand has built up a large audience on social media.

He has over 11 million followers on X (formerly known as Twitter), while he also hosts daily livestreams on video site Rumble for hundreds of thousands of viewers.
