Dozens die after bus plunges into gorge in the Indian state of Uttarakhand

At least 36 people were killed Monday morning after a bus tumbled into a deep gorge in India’s Uttarakhand state.

The bus, with about 45 passengers on board, veered off the road and plunged 200 meters downhill near Marchula in the Almora district at around 7am local time, officials said. The death toll is expected to rise as police and state disaster response forces begin search and rescue operations.

Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami said the injured have been taken to hospital in Ramnagar. “I am personally monitoring the incident and an investigation into the matter is underway by the state police,” he said.

Authorities are also investigating whether the accident was caused by a mechanical defect. According to local media, the bus is owned by Garhwal Motor Owners Union Ltd.

Residents of nearby villages rushed to the scene and tried to rescue passengers, some of whom had been thrown from the bus when it tumbled off the cliff.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has announced a compensation package for the families of each person killed as well as those injured in the crash, his office announced on X.

Day 3, Dubai Test: at a glance

Moment of the day Lahiru Gamage, the pace bowler from Sri Lanka, has had to play a lot of cricket to have a chance at the top level. The 29-year-old debutant played his first first-class match eleven years ago. His maiden Test wicket was one to savour, as he bowled Pakistan opener Shan Masood through the gate. It set in motion the rot for the Pakistani batting side.

Stat of the day – 73 Haris Sohail needed 73 balls to hit a boundary. That’s a curious quirk, considering the aggressive intentions he showed from the start. Pakistan’s batsmen were urged to attack Rangana Herath after their implosion against his left-arm spin in Abu Dhabi. Haris did his best to oblige and hit the second ball he faced for a huge six in a row.

The verdict A year ago, when Pakistan played their first day-night Test at this ground, they had a 222-run lead over the West Indies in the first innings. The away side still pushed their hosts relatively close on the final evening. With the opposite almost the exact case, Pakistan must still hope they can salvage a win somewhere.
