A terrified mother saw her son’s phone ‘go up in smoke’ on a train leaving Liverpool Lime Street Station. Natasha Weston, 36, was visiting her brother in Widnes on Saturday with her partner and three children. They had spent the day in the city center and were on their way home Widnes on the 8.37pm Liverpool Lime Street to Crewe service.

Her son Harvey’s phone had not been used all day and was turned off and in her bag. Natasha gave Harvey, 10, his mobile phone to play games on while they were on the train. The mother told it the ECHO: “After five minutes, Harvey turned to me and said his phone was getting hot in his hand. I took it from him and as I did it started to smoke. My partner took it from my hand and threw it on the floor of the carriage.

“We inhaled the smoke and the phone had melted into the carpet so we couldn’t pick it up. I just had to get out of there with my babies.”

Harvey had received the phone as a gift in April and is “very upset and shocked” by what happened on Saturday.

The family remembers a group of young men sitting across from them on the train who began recording as events unfolded. Natasha needs proof that this incident occurred in order to claim a new phone for Harvey through her insurance.
