Erick Thohir confirms cancellation of Terminal 4 project at Soekarno-Hatta Airport

TEMPO.CO, JakartaState-owned enterprises or SOE Minister Erick Thohir has officially announced the cancellation of the Terminal 4 project Soekarno-Hatta International Airport in Tangerang, Bantam. Instead of building a new terminal, the government will focus on optimizing and upgrading the existing terminals 1, 2 and 3.

“We must ensure efficient use of all projects, the benchmarks are clear: not wasteful. That is why we have decided to cancel Terminal 4,” he said at the Senayan Parliament Complex on Monday, November 4, 2024.

The Terminal 4 project, started during President Jokowi’s administration in 2019, was estimated to cost Rp14 trillion. However, after careful evaluation, Erick concluded that the project was not necessary and that upgrading the existing terminals, which requires a budget of approximately Rp1 trillion, would be sufficient to increase passenger capacity.

“Terminals 1, 2 and 3 can be maximized by improving both the lanes and the areas or rooms,” he noted.

The minister emphasized the government’s commitment to efficient and transparent project management and to avoiding corruption scandals that have plagued state-owned enterprises over the past five years.

Former chairman Jokowi set a target to complete Terminal 4 by 2021 to increase Soekarno-Hatta Airport’s passenger capacity to 110 million per year. “We aim to accommodate 110 million passengers annually with the addition of Terminal 4,” he noted during an inspection of Runway 3 at the airport in June 2019.
