The murdered KwaDukuza traffic policeman was ‘determined to fight

Traffic came to a standstill at the N2 Groutville exit, where Officer Desmond Arumugam was killed in the line of duty.

It is understood he was leading a crime prevention team to set up a roadblock when he noticed a suspiciously parked minibus taxi.

“The vehicle stopped in a very suspicious manner on the link road, but discovered that a robbery was already in progress in the kombi.

“When they (passengers) tried to signal to him that a robbery was in progress, the suspect, who already had a firearm in his hand, fired several shots at him. Unfortunately, he succumbed to the gunshot wounds,” said KwaDukuza spokesperson Sifiso. Zulu

Zulu said passengers told them the suspect had hailed the taxi at Groutville and pretended he was traveling to Durban.

He then robbed them of their belongings at gunpoint.

“Well, the taxi driver and his assistant got out of the taxi to take cover and the suspect drove the vehicle a few meters away. He then left it with the passengers on the road.

“He then walked into the nearby settlement and disappeared.”

He says 50-year-old Arumugam was one of the most dedicated officers in the fight against crime.

“He was well liked by his colleagues. He had their respect and he made an enormous contribution to the municipality in its efforts to create a safe environment for our people.

“The loss is really sad. We are shocked, but we extend our condolences to the family, friends and colleagues,” said Zulu.

KZN Police have launched a murder investigation and are working to track down the perpetrator.
