Catch up with Suzanne Vega backstage at Bourbon and beyond, Kyle Meredith delved into the latest adventures of the timeless artist, including her new single ‘Rats’. Listen above or wherever you get your podcasts.

“Rats” is a raw tribute to the dark corners of New York City, inspired by punk mainstays like The Ramones and newer post-punk group Fontaines DC. The timing couldn’t have been better: the song fell next to the very first National Rat Summit in New York, giving Vega’s track a fitting place among the urban atmosphere it romanticizes.

Vega’s creative partner in crime on this song – and has been for twenty years – is Gerry Leonard, whose Bowie-esque guitar work adds layers of texture that range from industrial folk to moody jazz. “Gerry has a vibe,” Vega explains, “where he can make anything sound like it belongs in New York.”

The real news? Vega’s first album since 2016 is scheduled for a spring release, coincidentally (or not) landing on the 40th anniversary of her iconic self-titled debut. Vega hints that this new record moves between genres; expect everything from folk rock to a Motown-inspired song, and even a song with a California ’70s vibe. For fans, it’s a return to the kind of thematic storytelling that has always characterized her work, with fresh twists on familiar urban motifs. “Life gets in the way,” she laughs, referring to her extended album hiatus, “but there’s always something in New York to write about.”
