Protesters gather outside Congressman Adam Smith’s home early Saturday

About two dozen people shouted outside the home of US Congressman Adam Smith early Saturday morning as part of a demonstration.

Bellevue Police received calls from multiple residents about an ongoing incident in the Cougar Mountain neighborhood at approximately 5:35 a.m. NORCOM said there were about 20 people shouting while standing outside the congressman’s home.

Officers said the protesters used five-gallon buckets and whistles, but left shortly after police arrived and informed them they were violating the city’s noise ordinance.

When KOMO 4 News spoke with Congressman Smith about the incident, he said this is a growing problem in the country, where people are using tactics aimed at threats, intimidation and bullying against elected officials.

“This is not so much about the issue they are protesting for, but it is about the normalization of threats and the rule of the mafia to get what you want in the political system, and it is a direct threat to political democracy,” he said. Congressman Smith.

Congressman Smith said his family and neighborhood were terrorized for more than an hour as people outside banged buckets, shouted and blew whistles.

“The point is that people want to terrorize others by giving them their way, and then the angry mobs show up and that’s a recipe for chaos and violence, just like what happened on January 6 and those years ago in Seattle.” Said Congressman Smith.

KOMO 4 News asked Congressman Smith how this will affect him in the future, and he said, “This isn’t going to change me. I will continue to serve, run and work hard for my community.”
