Amish child shot and killed while hunting chipmunks, troopers say

MEADVILLE, Pa. (Gray News) – An 11-year-old Amish child was shot in the head Saturday while chipmunk hunting with friends, according to a Pennsylvania State Police police report.

Members of the Amish community told police that three children participated in a squirrel hunt and two tried to hit the animal with their BB guns.

According to troopers, one round was fired from a .22 caliber rifle by one of the hunters, missing the chipmunk, while a follow-up round was fired as the chipmunk advanced on him.

After the final shot, another boy saw the 11-year-old lying motionless on the ground and went to get help from an adult working in the field.

The boy was taken to a children’s hospital. He died on Sunday.

The police report does not indicate whether charges will be filed.
